    Mafic alkaline metasomatism in the lithosphere underneath East Serbia: evidence from the study of xenoliths and the host alkali basalts

    Effects of mafic alkaline metasomatism have been investigated by a combined study of the East Serbian mantle xenoliths and their host alkaline rocks. Fertile xenoliths and tiny mineral assemblages found in depleted xenoliths have been investigated. Fertile lithologies are represented by clinopyroxene (cpx)-rich lherzolite and spinel (sp)-rich olivine websterite containing Ti–Al-rich Cr-augite, Fe-rich olivine, Fe–Al-rich orthopyroxene and Al-rich spinel. Depleted xenoliths, which are the predominant lithology in the suite of East Serbian xenoliths, are harzburgite, cpx-poor lherzolite and rare Mg-rich dunite. They contain small-scale assemblages occurring as pocket-like, symplectitic or irregular, deformation-assisted accumulations of metasomatic phases, generally composed of Ti–Al- and incompatible element-rich Cr-diopside, Cr–Fe–Ti-rich spinel, altered glass, olivine, apatite, ilmenite, carbonate, feldspar, and a high-TiO2 (c. 11 wt%) phlogopite. The fertile xenoliths are too rich in Al, Ca and Fe to simply represent undepleted mantle. By contrast, their composition can be reproduced by the addition of 5–20 wt% of a basanitic melt to refractory mantle. However, textural relationships found in tiny mineral assemblages inside depleted xenoliths imply the following reaction: opx+sp1 (primary mantle Cr-spinel) ±phlogopite+Si-poor alkaline melt=Ti–Al-cpx+sp2 (metasomatic Ti-rich spinel)±ol±other minor phases. Inversion modelling, performed on the least contaminated and most isotopically uniform host basanites (87Sr/86Sr=c. 0.7031; 143Nd/144Nd=c. 0.5129), implies a source that was enriched in highly and moderately incompatible elements (c. 35–40× chondrite for U–Th–Nb–Ta, 2× chondrite for heavy rare earth elements (HREE), made up of clinopyroxene, carbonate (c. 5%), and traces of ilmenite (c. 1%) and apatite (c. 0.05%). A schematic model involves: first, percolation of CO2- and H2O-rich fluids and precipitation of metasomatic hydrous minerals; and, second, the subsequent breakdown of these hydrous minerals due to the further uplift of hot asthenospheric mantle. This model links intraplate alkaline magmatism to lithospheric mantle sources enriched by sublithospheric melts at some time in the past

This paper has attempted to evaluate a number of advanced parameters for improved sleep onset estimation, such as EEG non-parametric coherence, power frequency and spectral band power. These parameters can be utilised in an on-line algorithm design for neurofeedback applications

    Influence of sinusoidally modulated visual stimuli at extremely low frequency range on the human EEG Activity

    The purpose of this study was to investigate whether sinusoidally modulated visual stimuli at extremely low frequencies (ELF) of 50, 16.66, 13, 10, 8.33 and 4Hz could influence the changes in EEG activity in 33 human subjects. An improved design of visual stimulator system has addressed an issue of electrical interference from electrical signals driven by LED arrays onto simultaneously recorded EEG. A comparison between 1 and 3-Way ANOVA was performed in order to evaluate whether visual stimuli at ELFs could influence the EEG in humans to compliment the currently active medical research in seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and photic driving. The results revealed that under evaluation of 1 and 3-Way repeated-measures ANOVA tests, the Theta, Alpha2 and Gamma EEG bands exhibited a common significant difference between ELF visual stimuli

    Characterizing the dynamical importance of network nodes and links

    The largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the networks is a key quantity determining several important dynamical processes on complex networks. Based on this fact, we present a quantitative, objective characterization of the dynamical importance of network nodes and links in terms of their effect on the largest eigenvalue. We show how our characterization of the dynamical importance of nodes can be affected by degree-degree correlations and network community structure. We discuss how our characterization can be used to optimize techniques for controlling certain network dynamical processes and apply our results to real networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Alterations in human EEG activity caused by extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields

    This study has investigated whether extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can alter human brain activity. Linearly polarised magnetic flux density of 20Â-T (rms) was generated using a standard double Helmholtz coils and applied to the human head over a sequence of 1 minute stimulations followed by one minute without stimulation in the following order of frequencies 50, 16.66, 13, 10, 8.33 and 4Hz. We collected recordings on 33 human volunteers under double-blind counter-balanced conditions. Each stimulation lasted for two minutes followed by one minute post-stimulation EEG recording. The same procedure was repeated for the EMF control sessions, where the order of control and exposure sessions was determined randomly according to the subject's ID number. The rest period between two conditions (exposure and control) was 30 minutes. The results indicate that there was a significant increase in Alpha1, Alpha2, and Beta1 at the frontal brain region, and a significant decrease in Alpha2 band in parietal and occipital region due to EMF exposure

    The effect of lipophilicity on the antibacterial activity of some 1-benzylbenzimidazole derivatives

    In the present paper, the antibacterial activity of some 1-benzylbenzimidazole derivatives were evaluated against the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. The minimum inhibitory concentration was determined for all the compounds. Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) was employed to study the effect of the lipophilicity parameters (log P) on the inhibitory activity. Log P values for the target compounds were experimentally determined by the “shake-flask” method and calculated by using eight different software products. Multiple linear regression was used to correlate the log P values and antibacterial activity of the studied benzimidazole derivatives. The results are discussed based on statistical data. The most acceptable QSAR models for the prediction of the antibacterial activity of the investigated series of benzimidazoles were developed. High agreement between the experimental and predicted inhibitory values was obtained. The results of this study indicate that the lipophilicity parameter has a significant effect on the antibacterial activity of this class of compounds, which simplifies the design of new biologically active molecules

    YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS ON SOME WHEAT VARIETIES GROWN IN ALEKSINAC REGION

    Yield and yield components of 5 wheat varieties (Kruna, Toplica, Zvezdana, Etida, Angelina) in Aleksinac region (Serbia) were analysed. The experiment was performed in randomized block design in 3 replications on the experimental field in area of Aleksinac city. The results showed relatively high yields in all varieties. The general average yield was 6140 kg ha-1. The highest average yield varied from 6858 kg ha-1 in cultivar Zvezdana to 5050 kg ha-1 in Toplica. The cultivar Kruna showed lowest number of productive stems per square meter – 572, and largest number in Zvezdana and Angelina, with an average of 658 and 641, respectively. Average longest spike was found in variety Angelina 12.4 cm, and shortest in Toplica (9.8 cm). The average number of spikelets per spike for all cultivars was 19.4. Cultivar Angelina showed biggest number (21.1), and Kruna smallest number (17.9). The biggest number of grains per spike was obtained in cultivar Etida (54.8), and lowest in Zvezdana (51.4). During the examination, the highest average value for hectoliter weight is obtained in variety Zvezdana (78.3 kg hl-1), and lowest in Toplica (75.4 kg hl-1). From the data on yield and yield components, it can be concluded that all tested varieties can be grown in the region of Aleksinac, with preference to varieties Zvezdana and Etida

    The effect of GSM-like ELF radiation on the alpha band of the human resting EEG

    Mobile phone handsets such as those operating in the GSM network emit extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields ranging from DC to at least 40 kHz. As a subpart of an extended protocol, the influence of these fields on the human resting EEG has been investigated in a fully counter balanced, double blind, cross-over design study that recruited 72 healthy volunteers. A decrease in the alpha frequency band was observed during the 20 minutes of ELF exposure in the exposed hemisphere only. This result suggests that ELF fields as emitted from GSM handsets during the DTX mode may have an effect on the resting alpha band of the human EEG
